Genmaicha is one of my favorites kinds of tea and this product by Zhi is possibly the best genmaicha I've ever encountered. It's perfectly blended and very smooth.

This tea has quite a unique flavor. The roasted brown rice adds a savory quality that results in a hearty broth-like tea. I have heard this tea is also referred to as "popcorn tea" because the grains of rice that pop while being roasted resemble popcorn. The digestive benefits of green tea as well as the savory flavor of this tea leads me to believe it would compliment a meal nicely.

If you haven't tried Genmaicha yet, do yourself a favor and at least get the sample size!

It's got a lovely yellow-green tint, and a nice, toasty aroma. The flavor is a bit nutty.

Because it contains rice, it's a great drink for soothing nausea and other tummy ills, as well.

Water: 160°F | Leaves: 1 tsp per 6 ounce cup | Infusion Time: 1.5 - 2 minutes

Basic Steeping Tips
- Use filtered or spring water, whenever possible
- Don’t over-boil water
- Remove leaves after recommended time (adjust to taste)
- If you want stronger tea, use more leaves instead of steeping for a longer time
Leaves can be re-steeped 2-3 times resulting in various flavor differences. Don’t throw out those leaves until they have given it all up!
Green tea has been researched a great deal over the last 20 years. Results indicate that the catechins in green tea are responsible for a lowered risk of heart disease, lowered risk of cancer (especially prostate and breast), and potential reduction in onset of Alzeheimer's.
Originating from Japan, Genmaicha is a green tea mixed with roasted brown rice. During the roasting process, a few grains of rice will “pop”, which is why this tea is sometimes referred to as the “popcorn tea”. Genmaicha is also known as the “people’s tea” because it was historically drunk by the lower class of Japan, with the rice used as a filler thus reducing the price of the tea. However, now Genmaicha is popular throughout the classes and is enjoyed by everyone.

According to legend, during the 15th century, a servant named Genmaicha was serving his master, a samurai warrior, some tea when a few grains of rice fell from his pocket and landed in his master’s tea. Infuriated by the contamination of his good tea, the samurai warrior pulled out his sword and chopped off Genmaicha’s head. Afterwards, the samurai warrior decided to drink the contaminated tea and was pleasantly surprised to find the taste rather pleasant. In honor of his servant, the samurai warrior ordered to have this tea served to him every morning and named it Genmaicha.
