Very, very nice medium roast Huan Gan Oolong from spring 1987.

Originally intended as a Ti Quan Yin, some of the lot was sequestered by a budding tea master for his first aged tea project. This has been reroasted five times (92, 95, 99, 09, 07) and still retains a well-rounded character with dark plum body and great mouth feel.

Richly textured, deep and mineral-y, with stone fruit on the back of the tongue and a soothing long finish. Leather, licorice, and raisin presominate even in the dry leaf. Holds up very well to several steepings.

Very limited quantity.

One of our Artisan Reserve organic oolong teas, a line of small batch handmade teas from a craft handed down over generations. Hand selected for having all the hallmark qualities of the highest grades with notable personality accents.

2.0 oz Pouch - $27.95

Pesticide-free, hand picked, 35% oxidized, mid-elevation from Hsinchu, Taiwan

    Quality

This is one of my first introductions to aged oolong tea, but not my very first. It is quite unique to me, from my limited perspective, in that it tastes like roasted sugar, big time. There is so much caramel here that it is almost overpowering, but not quite. It settles down quite a bit after the first infusion. I do it gong fu style (to the best of my ability) and get 5-6 very good infusions.
There is no harshness here, but perhaps it is a tad bit limited in the lingering taste department. Which is not to say there isn't any, but it does seem to round of a bit quicker than a couple of my other aged oolongs.
That said, it is indeed a winner. I have served it to a few true oolong aficionados who have commented on its great presentation and "patience".
So thank you for another delicious tea, Zhi peeps!

Water: 205°F | Leaves: 1.5 -2 teaspoons per 10 ounce cup | Infusion Time: 2 minutes first steep, 1 minute or less second steep, then add 15-30 seconds per steep. You can get 7-10 steeps from this amazing tea.

Basic Steeping Tips
- Use filtered or spring water, whenever possible
- Don’t over-boil water
- Remove leaves after recommended time (adjust to taste)
- If you want stronger tea, use more leaves instead of steeping for a longer time.
Leaves can be re-steeped 2-3 times resulting in various flavor differences. Don’t throw out those leaves until they have given it all up!
Polyphenol in oolong tea is effective in controlling weight. It activates the enzyme that is responsible for dissolving triglycerides. Studies have confirmed that a 2-3 cup per day intake of oolong tea contributes to enhancing the function of fat metabolism and controlling obesity.
